India Gate Delhi
India Gate is the most prominent landmark in the capital city of India, Delhi. India Gate is a memorial built in the memory of 90,00 brave martyrs who lost their lives during World War 1 and the Third Afghan War.Designed by Edward Lyutens, India Gate Delhi is a 42 meters arch shaped gateway carved out of the red Bharatpur Stone to honor the unknown soldiers who laid down their lives fighting for the British Empire in India during the World War I and the Afghan War. Beneath the arch of India Gate is the Amar Jyoti, the eternal flame in a shrine which marks the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
The message inscribed on India Gate reads, "To the dead of the Indian armies who fell honored in France and Flanders Mesopotamia and Persia East Africa Gallipoli and elsewhere in the near and the far-east and in sacred memory also of those whose names are recorded and who fell in India or the north-west frontier and during the Third Afghan War."
